A crisp, clean, well fitting shirt will make any man man look good. However it pays to be aware of the different style of  collars and cuffs available to you.

Cuffs

There are two main type of cuffs

Double Cuff - This style is sometimes known as the French Cuff . This style involves the use of cufflinks to lock the cuff in place.

Barrell Cuff - This involves a single button to lock the sleeve in place.

Double cuffs are considered more elegant and should always be worn for formal occassions such as a black tie event. However here at male-grooming-tips.com we have noticed that the Barrel cuff is undergoing a revolution and the 2 and even 3 button cuffs are now available and are well worth investigating even if only to add a bit of variety to your wardrobe.

Collars

Before we at male-grooming-tips.com began our research into shirts we were unaware of the huge variety of collars that were availabe. For example the choice we had on the number of buttons or the collar depth.

We have managed to break the choice down to  four basic types: straight, spread, tab and buttondown.

Straight collars are generally more traditional complements almost any facial structure.

Spread collars are cut at a sharper angle, leaving more fabric showing at the top of the shirt placket. Futhermore this cut can have a straight edge (sometimes refered to as the the Windsor spread collar) or a  cut with a slight arc. This Spread collar is popular in shirts that have the collars and cuffs a different colour from the body of the shirt e.g. White cuffs and collar with a blue shirt.

Tab collars resemble straight collars in cut,
with a small tab that fastens the points together underneath the knot of the necktie

Buttondown collar is just that - A collar that has is buttoned down at its peak. Its considered less formal than any of the other styles and can be worn without a tie.

Collar types are a matter of personal taste however you should be aware that the type will have an impact on your overall apperance

a straight collar will suit those with a thin face while a  spread collar will suit those of us with more rotund faces.

For the most elegant look male-grooming-tips.com recommend that men should wear double cuffs and have no shirt pocket which will provide a cleaner look. However every wardrobe should have a number of 2/3 button barrel cuffs just to provide a little variety.
